Uluwatu, is the bohemian, trendy and relaxed off-the-beaten-path destination in Bali. This peninsula in the southwest of Bali offers world-class surf breaks which makes it a very special place for surfers. You really don’t have to be a surfer to appreciate this place though! With the pristine white sand, turquoise waters and towering limestone cliffs, it can be easily said that Uluwatu is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Bali. Nature lovers and boho-trendy lifestyle seekers - this one's for you!
2D Cafe
Just what is a 2D cafe?’ you may ask. Well, it’s like being the main character in your own cartoon strip! You and your traveling companions are the only three dimensional beings, surrounded by cute two dimensional decor and furniture. On the 2nd floor of the cafe, you will find this cute 2D cartoon room. This cafe serves delicious western & eastern food, cakes & coffee, at very reasonable prices. We recommend the Strawberry Fizz!
GWK Park
Now we move on to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park, which has the 4th tallest statue in the world! The size of this statue of Lord Vishnu is colossal! The incredibly imposing statue of Vishnu towers above, on his mount, the mythical eagle, Garuda. Designed by renowned Balinese artist Nyoman Nuarta, the statue and pedestal is 120.9 meters high with a width of 64 meters thanks to Garuda’s wingspan.
The design was inspired by a story from Hindu mythology about the search for Amrita (the elixir of life). According to this legend, Garuda agreed to be ridden by Lord Visnu in return for the ability to use the elixir to liberate his enslaved mother.
There are also cultural performances happening here daily and segways can also be rented as a fun way to get around the park.
Karang Boma Cliff
Wow, here you really could believe this is the edge of The Earth! Karang Boma Cliff is also known as the Uluwatu Cliff.
It is the most popular viewpoint in the south of Bali.
It has a stunning and spectacular panoramic view, looking out over the Indian ocean, dreamy beaches and other Uluwatu hotspots..
Melasti Beach
Melasti beach is one of the best white sand beaches you can find in the southern part of Bali. Crystal blue waters and pure white sands. Melasti Beach features a lot of instagrammable spots. One of which is the huge Kori Agung gate. It is said to alleviate negative energies by ‘penglukatan’, or ‘cleansing’ for those who pass through it.
As you head down to Meslati Beach the drive is fantastic!. The windy roads twist and turn around the immense limestone cliffs. This sight is sure to be a memory of your trip in the south of Bali. Before you head down to the beach itself make sure to ask your driver to pull over at one of the many viewpoints to take a shot from above of the turquoise waters.
Kecak Dance
Also known as the ‘Ramayana monkey chant’, the dance is performed by a circle of as many as 150 performers wearing checked cloths around their waists. It describes a mythical story of the Hundu religion. Firstly, the performers move their bodies rhythmically to the left and to the right, chanting the words, "chak ke-chak ke-chak ke-chak" continuously in coordinated harmonious beat, with an undulating rhythm. It is truly hypnotic!
Gradually the rhythm speeds up and in turns they lift their hands, trembling, into the air. The kecak sound or ‘music’ is produced only by the human voice.
The performance depicts a battle in which the monkey-like Vanaras (mythical forest beings), led by Hanuman (Rama’s companion), help Prince Rama (God of Love) fight the evil King Ravana. Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.
